Pallet houses
Fast and structurally sound homes from one of the highest waste stream materials in the US and abroad, PALLETS!!

Bar Stool Building Plans Middle Schoolhow to Bar Stool Building Plans Middle School for Solution

There are two types of wooden pallets made, HT (heat treated) and MB (Methyl-Bromide), we only use heat treated pallets in our designs and builds.

We are pushing for many homes built from this very high waste material, we use all natural materials as insulation, in this case being light straw clay which has an insulation value of about 1.5 per inch.

We then add an adobe plaster on the interior and exterior or the structure, this is typically local materials sources right from the build site! This provides both insulation and thermal mass!

This structure can be cladded and insulated with conventional materials, although obviously that is not what we are aiming for.

Roofing structures can be made from pallets and also from dimensional lumber as in conventional roof framing, then covered with corrugated metal, which will also allow for clean drinkable rainwater capture, the roof could also be thatched to catch rainwater.

A simple single gutter used to divert rainwater into rain barrels from the 225 sq. ft. roof, in Texas rainfall, could accumulate approx. 300-700 gallons each month.

The foundation could be built with or without a joist system, typically in earthen homes the actual ground is the floor, in countries where this is a necessity the wall system can be set directly onto either a cinder block, rock, or other material stem wall.

1. A rubble filled trench can be installed in the ground underneath this structure to provide a stabilized base as well as preventing rainwater from accumulating in the floor of the home.

2. Local materials such a s bamboo or other sources materials can be used to create the floor.

I have been building residential homes for 24 years, I know structural stability inside and out, the strength of a pallet home is comparable to that of a conventionally framed homes.

I will be travelling to South Dakota this July to build a family on the Pine Ridge Lakota Reservation a 30x30 Pallet house using this exact method!!

    Thatsa whole lotta holes!!!

    thanks for reading the description!!

Good start. I look forward to seeing more details. Is there a loft? How are you going to anchor the floor to the blocks?

The house is meant to serve 2 purposes, either stationary or if needed to be it can go mobile, in the permanent situation this could be set on piers that are poured into the ground. In this configuration it is set on top of the cinder blocks with no tie downs, much like a shed. We have built this exact structure and i will post pictures.

The "" and I are in the process of manifesting this design as my personal dwelling. We are also working on a 400 sq ft house for the "" and his family. As you can see it is just pallets now, but I would like to reiterate: the pallets will be stuffed with a mixture of straw and slip (watery clay) as insulation, and then plastered with adobe.

We also lay studs between each row of pallets to brace and strengthen the wall. It''t import/export with pallets, I could be wrong but recent estimations is that pallets are becoming as plentiful waste as tires, with over 4 billion in use, thats not counting pallets that are piled and never used again or burned or simply discarded.

Pallets are free or next to free in North America, but they cost real money in other parts of the world, still, I love the idea.

I have friends in the UK, Africa and South America and Australia and they all agree there are pallets available there for free just like here in America.

I was paying almost $6 a pallet for used (semi-broken) ones in Cameroon. There may be lots of them out there but in the developing world they are far from free.

Bar Stool Building Plans Middle Schoolhow to Bar Stool Building Plans Middle School for If this contest is about bringing homes to the homeless, then I would question how are we doing it now? are we shipping large quantities of new materials to developing countries? at what price? we do have a great abundance here in the US of pallets so why couldn'' 2by material from the pallets elsewhere.

And used beat up pallets are seldom uniform. I think the headaches will far outweigh any benefit once others try to duplicate your project.

And seriously... This is exactly what they do in the slums right now. This is exactly what we are trying to get away from.

And finally, let me know what your municipality says when they find out someone is living in your backyard project. I think you are in violation of a whole bunch of building codes. Just like those in poverty in the slums.

Billie please comment in a way that is productive because all of your comment to a great many of the people here has been negative, you bring nothing to the table except a horrible demeanor, please go troll somewhere else.

it is obvious you have ZERO experience in this field, but probably a typical wood butcher carpenter.

Billie, do you mind citing where "" are using this exact building method in ""? You''ve wanted to suggest pallet roof trusses for Haiti but it seems that all pallets get burned there...

Hello Patti!! well with only 3 days of submission left, I don''t really have aspirations of winning, but though it was a good way to network with other people with great ideas!! Yes in the stem wall configuration I certainly would raise it above the ground!! love your work Patti!!

Yea man, You got pallets I got bottles. I like your idea, especially if found exotic wood pallets from international shipping! Those could be reused for furniture to go inside as well.

Oh yes what a find that would be!! right now the bulk of the material used here in the US is oak believe it or not!! we have talked about re-sawing the slats from some pallets into flooring for the loft section of this pallet house. I also use bottles and am working on a design with some in a cob bench and oven!!

Bar Stool Building Plans Middle Schoolhow to Bar Stool Building Plans Middle School for here''m more partial to flexible form rammed earth. I hadn''s strong, practical, durable and inexpensive. I know what you''s materials, the only modularity involved in this building system are: -pallet walls -slip/straw infill -lateral stud braces between pallet rows -adobe/lime plaster on interior and exterior

The windows, doors, foundation, floor, and roof depend on one''s needs and limits.

I like this method a lot! These for 1 last update 2020/08/08 make wonderful houses!! they provide insulation AND thermal mass!!!These make wonderful houses!! they provide insulation AND thermal mass!!!

It is like typical favela. If you go to my project, you see huts, built with everything founded, also pallets. So would be a idea, just to do parts of a House, like cheap secure Windows and Doors, easy to integrate in Types of Material. I like this Recycling Idea more than recycle plastic

Interesting use of pallets. I think now you can perfect your design, I mean a shape easier to construct and that will help to make the budget lower, I think you don´t need a porch or the higher body of the house unless you are using it for ventilation purposes.

I unlike a lot of the IDEA OWNERS here have actually built this structure and it is very simple to put together, Its price is well within for 1 last update 2020/08/08 the $300 limit, dependent upon available materials. We have lost the value of a porch in todays society, a porch is a great place to sit with friends and family relax in the shade, be outdoors but not in the elements, The loft ensures more room below and does act as a solar chimney of sorts to draw warmer air in the day up and vent outside. That´s my point, is an easy assemble structure, the porch just add structure complications as you need post and beams to build it, besides it requires technical calculations and additional foundations for the post. What you talk about porch value it´s a first world appreciation I think people in slums have other worries but relaxing with friends. I already have this chat with another contestant you have a good constructive process but you submit a design that looks more suitable for a western city suburb. About the loft you are right , it´s a good solution for cooling the inside.

I think what your missing is that the roof of the porch is also the roof of the first floor, it would take nothing extra to do it as the frame for the homes is also the frame for the porch and it literally takes NO technical anything.

Ok, thanks for the explanation. You have already build this design so it´s proved it works well. Good luck!

we are in the process of building as you can see in the pics, but the structure itself is finished, and very strong!

The structure looks good, a little small, but what can you expect...good luck!!

thank you very much, pallets by default are very modular and this design can be expanded upon to fit any family size very fast and very easily!!

My husband and I just purchased land in Nevada and are looking into alternative building methods and honestly we dont have a lot of money and this seems like the easiest and least expensive way to go. Do you know of any resources for us to learn more.

Good idea! You for 1 last update 2020/08/08 are closer to a $ 300,- solution than many others which were estimated higher.Good idea! You are closer to a $ 300,- solution than many others which were estimated higher.

Thank you!! it has been very hard even being in this contest due to the fact that it has become a farce, every new design school graduates chance to display designs that cost thousands of dollars.... I hope that a realistic solution is decided on for housing the homeless in all parts of the world and I truly believe our method will do just that!!

Bar Stool Building Plans Middle Schoolhow to Bar Stool Building Plans Middle School for Nice design. I really like the structure you built, looks like a great little cottage. Have you seen or had any luck with adding a 2nd layer? I find the number of bungalows in this competion unerving.

We also have a 540 sq ft build going right now also, we truly believe in the tiny house concept so most of our designs are based on that. By layer do you mean a second story? if so then yes the loft is 6 ft in height so might as well be a second floor.

Ive discovered this pallate system in this submission and I am very interested in the way they are built What do you find is you toughest issue when you try to make the height of walls equally rigid. In the smaller homes we design we have found that a staggered brick like installation is not needed and we try our best to find pallet is exact or as close as possible in size, the installation process is as follows: Once we decide on the foundation type, typically we always try to keep concrete forms out of our choices, we secure scrap 2x4 cleat blocks to the foundation, set back about 1/2"", then slip the pallets over the blocks and secure them with screws horizontally into the cleats, toe screw the 2x4 frame of the pallet into the foundation as we level each one. We clamp each pallet together with C -clamps and fasten together with screws and sometimes carriage bolts, we butt corners with lapping pallets ends, and repeat this process as a soldier course along the perimeter of the foundation. The top of the first course of pallets gets a continual 2x4 plate that is screwed down into the tops of the 2x4 frame of the pallets, this allows the pallets to be force straightened and gives it some pretty powerful rigidity!! We then install the second course of pallet just like the first, windows and doors are framed either as bucks or conventional trimmers and headers. A 2x4 top plate is installed on top of the second course and marks for joists and rafters which are installed conventionally.

In larger homes, we have found that we do have to stagger the pallets in long runs or insert a vertical 2x4 every 8''t worry about the others. You did the right thing. Pallet production is simple and very automated. It uses low grade woods or composites as it''t wait to read lots of your posts. get views on instagram https://followersgain.co.uk/buy-instagram-followers/
